Measure the closet horizontally and vertically. Make a sketch of the closet to scale on graph paper. Include all hanging bars, corner closet shelves to already have. Fill in the shelves needs of the closet, beginning at one corner of your sketch and work your way around the closet clockwise. Folded clothes and shoes require a shelf at least 12 inches deep. Determine the type of shelving material you want to use. Most closet systems use types wire shelves, laminated MDF or solid wood. Weigh the costs and benefits of each before making a decision. Purchasing materials and install the shelves yourself. Or hire a contractor to build the closet for your sketched design.
